Taragarh Fort - Kota
Taragarh Fort
Rajasthan is a land of forts and palaces and Taragarh fort is one among the must visit fort in Rajasthan.
Taragarh Fort or 'The Fort of Stars' is the most impressive of structures in city of Bundi. Located thiry nine kilometers from Kota, the fort is in a deep ramshackle condition with overgrown vegetation. Still, the peace and feel of security gives this palace the touch of life. It was constructed in mid-thirteen centaury upon a steep hillside.
The main reason for this heavy structure was to create a centre for military activity in the region of Ajmer during the Mughal domination period. Later the Taragarh fort was used as a sanatorium for British soldiers after the fall of the Mughals.
The fort exemplifies the knowledge of contemporary engineering and architecture. These forts had the design of covering the whole city to protect from any attack. Large water reseviors have been built up within the fort for the same reason. Amazing fact is, these reservoirs have been carved out of rock bases of the fort.
The embankment of the fort holds the Bhim Burj, the largest and legendary cannon.
The tourists are welcomed at the main gate by some meticulous carved elephants. Lakshmi Pol, Gagudi ki Phatak and Phuta Darwaza are other the gateways to the fort.
Taragarh fort was once a trap of crisscrossing tunnels dug under the entire hillside. These tunnels were used by the king and his deputies as an escape route in case of danger from enemies.
The fort also houses the dargah (holy place) of the former governor Miran Saheb who dedicated his life in an encounter for the protection of the fort. A palace was built for the wives and paramours of the kings and rulers in the fort; they are called the Rani Mahal. The glorious history of the past is evident in faded murals and the broken stained glass windows present in the fort.
Adhai-Din-Ka-Jhonpra
Legend says that this mosque was built in two and half days: Hence is the name. It is a fine structure of the dedication and art work of Indo - Islamic architecture. This is a relic of an old mosque and consists of quadrangle with front screen wall of a seven pointed arches.
A panoramic view of the town of Bundi is possible from the fort.
"Taragarh Fort must have been built by angels not by human beings," was the comment of Rudyard Kipling after experiencing this structure.
