City Palace - Jaipur
City Palace
Located in the capital of Rajasthan, the City Palace of Jaipur is an imposing blend of traditional Rajasthan and Mughal architecture. This City palace Jaipur was built by Raja Sawai Jai Singh and later the following rulers made extensions to it. Around one seventh of the city of Jaipur lies in the walled premises of the Jaipur fort.
The complex is differentiated into a courtyards and buildings separated by sprawling gardens. Within the City palace several palatial structures like the Chandra Mahal, Mubarak Mahal, and many others can be found along with the City Palace Museum. The City Palace consists of four main and several minor palaces.
The first courtyard engulfs the Mubarak Mahal which was built by the king Maharaja Madho Singh II in the late nineteenth century. It is now turned in the Raja Man Singh II museum and displays the royal costumes of the Kings and Queens of Jaipur. The marble made pavilion the Diwan-e-khas or the hall of private audience in the palace now is the place of display of the world's largest sterling silver objects, two gigantic vessels.
The art gallery also known as Diwan-e-aam (meaning the hall of public) preserves some very ancient Hindu manuscripts and work of Rajputs, Mughals and Persia. The weapons on display here date back to the 15th century and are in a remarkable state even today. One of the unique weapons on display here is the scissor-action dagger; apart from this one finds jewels and ivory handled swords, pistols, chain armours, belt sword, poison tipped blades, small and assorted cannons and gun powder pouches.
The seven storied Chandra Mahal is the residence of the current Maharaja of Jaipur and his family. The Chandra Mahal is famous for the exquisite peacock in the courtyard which is worth seeing. The art of the palace such as paintings or mirrored walls has a traditional touch.
'Badal Mahal' or the Palace of Clouds lies in front of the Chandra Mahal, the palace of Moon. The Govind Devji Temple lies in between the two. Also in between the Chandra Mahal and the Badal Mahal lies a system of fountains for the paved path. Hawa Mahal or the Palace of the wind is an integral part of the fort yet it lies separated from the main complex.
The City palace Jaipur thus offers something unique to its visitors who feel as if they belong to this place as they go through the artifacts of this museum.
