The magnificient fort of Chittaurgarh was built between the fifth and the eighth century; this mansion attracts countless visitors every year. It was earlier named Chitrakot after the Mori Rajput King, Chitrangad under whose reign it was built.
The past of Chittaurgarh Fort boasts the heroic deeds the Rajput nobles encountered while saving their motherland and sacrifices the beautiful queens made to maintain their dignity. One of the legends is associated with a battle between Ala-ud-din Khilji(the Sultan of Delhi) and Ratan Singh. Around some time in the late fourteenth century, the sultan fell for the ruler’s wife after he had a momentary look of the beautiful lady in a water tank. In order to get her, he attacked Chittaurgarh. The Rajputs fought bravely against the intention of the then India Sultan to guard the dignity of the queen and but they were wiped out after some fierce battle. The queen of Chittaurgarh, Rani Padmini, commited sucide (Agni-Dahan) along with many other ladies of households to escape humiliation at the hands of sultan and his nobles.
Chittaurgarh fort is built 180 meter above the sea level, occupies two eighty hectares and rises up to a height of one hundred and fifty meters. The walls run along the 13 km peripheral length of the gate. The fort can be accessed by many gates. It is a fine example of the Rajput style of architecture.
Kirti Stambh
The seven-storied structure of Kirti Stambh is dedicated to the first jain Guru tirthankara or spiritual teacher, named Adinath. The architecture is thirty feet at the base and reduces to fifteen feet as it rises on top. It is cramped with a stairway of 54 steps. It adorned with Jain sculptures on the outer surroundings. It has a five feet high statue of the saint.
Vijay Stambh
Vijay Stambh is the most imposing structure within the region of Chittaurgarh Fort. Built up on a pedestal of forty seven square feet; the tower stands at a height of 122 feet. There are 157 steps circular stair case. It is said that it took ten years to complete the tower. The tower was built in the fifteenth century to signify the victory of the king over Mahmud Khilji of Malwa. The entire structure is covered with sculptures of Hindu deities and episodes from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata.
Sammidheshwara Temple
Next to tower is The Sammidheshwara Temple. Gaumukh reservoir and the palace of Queen Padmini are important spots. Places like Bhimtal Tank, Meera Temple, Kumbha Shyam Temple, Neelkanth Mahadev Temple and Kalika Mata Temple are worth visiting.
Jauhar Mela
The fort Chittorgarh hosts the biggest Rajput festival famously known as the "Jauhar Mela". It takes place annually on the anniversary of jauhars (mass suicide by the female community) that was done by the queen Padmini. This festival explores primarily the bravery of Rajput ancestors and the three (at different times) jauhars that happened in Chittorgarh Fort. Political ans socio economic situation of the country is also discussed during the celebrations.
It is a fine example of the Rajput style of architecture.
