Being one of the oldest cities of India, Pushkar is decorated with a number of beautiful temples all around. Together with the Pushkar fair, these stunning temples remain to be the premier attractions among the tourists, who visit Pushkar. Though the Mughal ruler, Aurangzeb destroyed a large number of Pushkar temples during his reign, they were rebuilt later on. Today, these temples are of much importance to each and every Hindu, who feels that visiting these temples, even once in a lifetime can bring them a lot of good. Some of the historical temples situated in the city of Pushkar are: -
Brahma Temple: - This temple is one major reason behind the huge crowd that gathers in Pushkar, so frequently. The reason being, there is no other Hindu temple in India, except the Brahma temple that is dedicated to Lord Brahma, the creator of the universe. Although Brahma shares one of the positions in the holy trinity of Hinduism with Shiva and Vishnu, there are only a few places to worship Brahma, the Pushkar Brahma temple being the holiest.
According to Indian history, this temple was built in the 14th century with silver coins embedded both in the floor and walls of the temple. All the steps, leading up to the temple are completely made up of marble and the walls are adorned with the images of peacock, which is known to be the vehicle of Saraswati, Brahma’s consort. Brahma can be seen here in a life-size form with four faces, each facing a different direction.
Mahadeva Temple: - This temple was built in the 19th century with a five-faced statue of Mahadeva. Entirely built up of white marble, this temple is one of the finest temples that one can find in the city of Pushkar.
Varah Temple: - Built by King Anaji Chauhan in the 12th century, the Varah temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the world. This temple has an image, in which the god can be seen in a human body with a face of a boar. It is said that it was the fifth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, when he came to kill Hiranayakashyap, the demon who had stolen the Vedas.
Savitri Temple: - This temple is dedicated to Goddess Savitri, one of the Brahma’s wives. As the temple is located on one of the highest hills in the city of Pushkar, one has to climb a series of long steps before reaching the shrine.
Raghunath Temples: - There are two Raghunath temples in Pushkar, one being new and the other being old. The old one was built in 1823 and has images of Narshimha, Venugopal and goddess Laxmi. This temple is one of the most beautiful temples that you can find in Pushkar, but due to some reason the temple authorities do not allow foreigners to get inside this temple. These temples are probably the only temples that do so.Together with aforementioned temples, there are a lot more Hindu temples in Pushkar, which were built in the past. Not only the Hindus, but tourists from all around the world admire these temples and dream giving a visit to them.
