Rajasthan is indeed a land of wonder, charm, traditions and magnificence. Situated on the Western corner of India, it is the country’s largest state in terms of area. Sharing its border with Pakistan on the western side, Punjab to the northern side, Gujarat to the southern side and Punjab & Haryana towards the eastern side, this land is primarily characterized by the scorching Thar Desert which extends parallel to the river valley formed by rivers Sutlej and Indus, in Pakistan. Many important towns of India like Jaisalmer, Barmer, Udaipur and the likes are located in this state. With Jaipur, commonly referred to as the Pink City, being its capital, Rajasthan houses the world’s oldest mountains- The Aravalli Ranges. Not only this, but with a hill station at Mount Abu, center of Pilgrimage at the famous Dilwara temples, wildlife reserves at Ranthambore and Sariska and a bird sanctuary at Bharatpur, Rajasthan truly displays huge diversity in operation despite the commonality which occurs in its geographic manifestation. Formed as a part of the Indian dominion on the 30th of March 1949, Rajasthan, as the name suggests, had historically been the land of the Rajputs. Famous legendary tales associated with kings and queens like Rana Kumbha, Maharana Pratap, and Rani Padmini have formed an essential part of the state’s culture.
In the ancient times, Rajasthan was the provincial capital of the renowned Indus valley civilization. Once inhabited by a variety of tribes, it soon was entirely controlled by the Rajputs. However, this rule too was not to last long. Despite frivolous battles being fought and a huge resistance movement being generated, Rajasthan succumbed to the injuries and fell victim to the Mughals. Nevertheless, the power was soon transferred to the East India Company which established the foundation of British Rule in India. Even during the British period, Rajasthan was a major centre of power which was exploited in every manner by the English. It was only after independence, that the state begun its journey towards its present stature.
Famous for its artistic culture and its valued traditions Rajasthan accurately portrays the spirit of India and the essence of art. Be it the classical music or folk dance, each piece has deep-rooted symbolism which has borne the brunt of ages and survived through it all. In fact the folk dances and music of this state have gained such prominence that tourists from around the world come to hear its musicians sing the ballads dedicated to war heroes and enjoy the flavor of ‘Ghoomar’ and ‘Kathputli’ , the dances of significance. Dressed in bright colors especially red, yellow and orange, the Rajasthani people have made considerable gains in their economy by means of handicraft. The famed ‘Zari’ form of embroidery which traces its roots to this glorious state is a vital part of the Indian exports. In fact, Rajasthani products have gained immense importance in the domestic and international market.
With numerous ancient forts, temples and havelis, donning its arena, Rajasthan has been granted with the right mix of contemporariness with traditionalism. A visit to the place, is indeed an everlasting experience.
