Periyar Tourism Information
Periyar in the ‘God’s own country’ Kerala, is a pleasant place to take a break from the crowds of towns and cities and cruise into the lakes. The National Park of Periyar has a beautiful lake at the centre of the sanctuary. The reservoir that meanders around the wooden hills was formed by a dam in 1895. It provides a great source of water to the local wildlife. The wildlife of Periyar consists of elephants, wild pigs, snakes and tigers.
The tourists flock this pace during dry the periods of March and April when the animals are found near the lake and the herds of elephants are seen swimming and bathing in the reservoir. If you are very lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of the majestic tigers when they come near the waters during this season. Periyar is basically famous only for its wild life where it gives shelter to leopards, barking deer, wild dogs and mouse deer. Visitors trekking into the park often come across a python or even a king cobra.
An excursion around the splendid lake is usually an ideal way to get familiar with the sanctuary. Apart from this, you can also walk under the guidance of a local guide. Boat services around the lake are also available for the visitors. The best season is October and June as you can view this place covered with full greenery and the beauty increases many folds.
