Mandawa Tourism Information
Mandawa is a famous town in the Jhunjhunu district of the historical state Rajasthan. It is a part of the Shekhawati region and is 190 km away from Jaipur. The place is very popular for its havelis and forts. The fort town is nicely connected with other places in the region by an excellent network of roads.
The town of Mandawa was a made a centre of main activities by the Bhojraj Ji Kasubsub in the mid of 18th century. As far as its origin is concerned, references are made about the Mandu Jat as the presumed founder of Mandawa. It is said that he first established a dhani at first and then dug a well here. The well was completed in 1740 AD. The place was also known as Mandu ki Dhani, Mandu ka bas or Manduwas initially. These names later were changed to Manduwa, Mandwa and finally it was named Mandawa.
Mandawa became a center of trade for the Shekhawati region when the ancient caravan from China and Middle East stopped here. The Rajput ruler Thakur Nawal Singh of Mandawa built a fort in 1775 to secure his outpost. The fort proved to be a great benefit for the town as it attracted many traders who settled here.
The fort dominates the place with an arched gateway that portrays Lord Krishna with his grazing cows. Apart from the fort of Mandawa, this place has a palace also that has rooms decorated with the images of Lord Krishna, amazing mirror work and exquisite carvings.
