Holding the distinction of being the third largest city of Kerala, Kozhikode, which is better known as Calicut, has gained the status of being one of the most powerful urban centers of the state. In fact, according to a recent survey that was conducted, Kozhikode was ranked as the second best city of India to live in. The name Kozhikode is what its natives prefer to refer to it as. For everybody else, the city holds different names. The city is of immense historical significance, as it was here, in 1498, that Vasco-de-gamma had landed. Having an elevation of about 3 feet from the sea, a number of rivers and lakes, run through the city. The climate of the city is extremely humid, owing to the effect of both – the North-East and the South-West monsoons. This is primarily why the economy of the city, is largely dependent upon activities like fishing and agriculture. Supporting a multi-ethnic population, the city is a unique wonder in itself, as it encompasses all kinds and types of religions and their religious practices.
The major places of interest here include the Kozhikode beach, Mananchira Square, Kappad beach, Beypore and the beautiful art gallery and the Krishna Menon museum. The place is also known for the diverse amount of camping and trekking experiences it can offer for tourists who prefer adventure and excitement.
