Kovalam Tourism Information
Towards the southernmost tip in India, is located the beautiful state of Kerala, in which nestles, the striking beach town of Kovalam. Right adjacent to the Arabian Sea, it is at a distance of merely 13 kilometers, from the state capital of Trivandrum.
Literally meaning a grove of coconut trees, it was the king of Travancore, who had wielded this town into public attention. The prospects of this town to grow as a tourist destination were discovered in early 30’s by the Europeans. However, it was only after the hippies arrived here in the 70’s that the town actually begin to gain importance. Geographically, Kovalam is naturally divided into three beaches, of the shape of a crescent, which are separated by outcropped rocks. These beaches are named Lighthouse Beach, Hawah beach and Samudra beach. Each of them has their own specialty and is thronged by tourists in every season. In fact, Hawah Beach was the first topless beach in India owing to the large amount of European women who moved about without tops. But, the Supreme Court of India banned this activity and restricted it only to private alcoves.
It is indeed the attraction of these beaches, which is responsible for the enormity of the tourists who come here. The ancient Hindu temples, churches and mosques are located in the vicinity of the town. Kovalam has also gained immense prominence due to the special varieties of fish and the soothing Ayurvedic treatments which have made their presence felt.
A visit to Kerala without Kovalam is incomplete indeed.
