Kottayam is a small town in the Indian state of Kerala and is an important publishing centre and trading centre of commercial crops. It was the first municipal town to achieve 100% literacy in the year 1989.
Kottayam is famous to attract tourists with its beautiful mountainous regions, backwaters, wildlife sanctuaries, temples and eye bobbling scenic landscapes. The serene palm-fringed backwaters are situated to its west and it has the Western Ghats to the east. The period between Septembers to March is the best to visit this place. The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is a famous tourist destination situated at Thekkady, and the route between Kottayam and the wildlife sanctuary has plantations of rubber, coffee, pepper and tea on both the sides which is a treat to look at.
16 kilometers away from Kottayam you can find a vast network of rivers and canals which empty out into this huge expanse of water body known as Vembanad Lake. It is a backwater tourist destination and a famous picnic spot. People can go for boating and fishing out here.
On the banks of Vembanad Lake house is situated the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary which is the visiting place for migratory birds like Siberian stork, heron, darter and many others. You can even see the woodpecker, crane, skylark and other colorful birds out there. The Meenachil River, Aruvikkuzhi waterfall, Marmala waterfall, Pathiramanal; a delightful island situated on Vembanad Lake, Kumarakon, Vennimala, Anchuvilakku, Vaikom, Poonjar Palace, Kayyoor and the Bay Island Driftwood Museum are also famous for attracting tourists.
