Kollam city which is the headquarters to the district of Kollam in Kerala state is well known for its scenic beauty, cashew processing and productions of coir. This city was known by the name of Desinganadu in the earlier times while it was famous by the name of Quilon among the Portuguese who are regarded to be the first Europeans to initiate a trading center at Kollam.
The northern borders of the district are formed by the Allapuzha district and the State capital Trivandrum marks its borders in the south. On its east lies the state of Tamil Nadu and Arabian sea to the west. It is a moderately industrialized state and the literacy rate, too, goes on well.
The tourist attractions of Kollam offer, among other attractions, several places of worship which comprises of temples, mosques and churches. Some important temples consists of Ochira Temple close to which is located Ochira Town Masjid spreading the aroma of religious peace and harmony in the atmosphere.

The Chinnakkada Palli Mosque is the oldest existing mosque in the city. Among the churches the Pullichira Church is the most renowned. Kollam is known to be major centers of missionaries from the early times. The Thangassery Light Hose, Mahatma Gandhi beach and park, the Adventure Park, the Square shaped Clock Tower and Sathamkotta are some other exciting places which are worth visiting.
