Jaisalmer Tourism Information
Situated in Western Rajasthan, Jaisalmer, also called the Golden city, stands tall on yellow sandstone, surrounded by a fort, containing numerous Jain temples and a palace. Located right amidst the extensive Thar Desert, the town has derived its name from the name of its founder. Having followed the same fate, as the other major towns of Rajasthan, this city was passed on from the princely Rajputs to the Mughals and from Britishers to the Indian dominion. It is the last town that separates India and Pakistan along its border.
Owing to the effect of the desert and the tropical conditions prevalent, the town experiences temperature extremes and is very hot in summers and extremely cold in winters. The town also holds the credit of contributing to India’s economy after the Oil and Natural Gas commission, discovered huge reserves of Natural gas, embedded in the sheath of the yellow sandstone.
Filled with a lot of structures of historical prominence, the town is indeed a tourist’s paradise. Camel safaris through the sand dunes of the desert have lent support to the growth of fiercely competitive travel agencies, who promise the tourists the best of the city.
Apart from these, the Jaisalmer forts, museums and lakes have proved to be a major tourist attraction. The desert festival held in January and February every year, is considered to be the best time to pay a visit to the town, as it is indeed the best of time, when you can discover the true Jaisalmer.
