Chittaurgarh Tourism Information
Standing tall on the banks of the Berach River, this town was the former capital of Mewar, which was ruled by the Sisodia clans of the Rajputs. Also known as Chittaur, the tales of the fierce battles which the kings of the town have fought, have today gained a legendary status, especially the Jouhar of Rani Padmini. The town has, overtime generated immense interest not only because of its celebrated history but also owing to the Buddhist inscriptions which were found in the town. It has today become an appropriate admixture of traditional ethos and modern culture with contemporary facilities penetrating its very core.
The major tourist attractions of the town include the Chittorgarh Fort which covers an area of about 700 acres. Great names in the history of India like Maharana Pratap, Rana Kumbha and Bhima, have been associated with the fort. Right next to it is the temple of Goddess Kali, which was initially constructed for the Sun God but was later converted to the female deity. Of huge importance is also the Vijay Stambh, which is a nine storey building constructed by Rana Kumbha to celebrate his victory over the Mughals.
Due to the unwavering faith and vitality which has been attached to the legends of Rana Kumbha and Rani Padmini, their respective palaces have been developed into tourist centers. However, it is the charisma of the adjoining Bassi Wildlife sanctuary which has lent the town an aura of adventure and has boosted up the rate of tourist excursions. Chittorgarh is indeed a marvel!
