Barmer Tourism Information
Renowned for its folk music and dance, Barmer is a district in the Rajasthan state. Barmer is situated in the west of Rajasthan and is a part of Thar Desert. Barmer found the origin of its name from its founder ruler, Bahada Rao who is said to have discovered the city in the 13th century. Balotra, Jasol and Siwana are some of the other major cities of the district.
Its location in the Great Indian Desert blocks the possibility of agricultural activities in the area. As such the people developed other skills in them for their survival. This is how the beginning and the flourishing of the art came into effect in this region. It is best recognized for its folklore, particularly its music and dance. The Bhopas and the Muslim Dholis happen to be stickler community in the art of music.
The Bhopas are the priest singers. Their music composition is chiefly dedicated to the local gods and the war heroes of the region.
The community of the Muslim Dholis performs the job of drummers on the special occasions such as festivals and other social ceremonies. To these musicians, their art is not just a heritage but, is also the only means to their livelihood.
The cattle fair, held every year at Barmer is another striking feature of this place. Barmer has today gained an extra advantage over other tourist destinations because of the importance attached to its famous forts, temples and other legendary stories which talk of the brave and the courageous.
