"Ladakh is India's most remote and least populated region. A land of soaring snow-topped peaks and plunging green valleys, this austerely beautiful region is
like nowhere else in India..”

– Lonely Planet
"Spilling out of a side-valley that tapers north towards eroded snow-capped peaks, the Ladakhi capital sprawls from the foot of a ruined Tibetan-style palace........"

Leh Tourism
The capital of haven in India, Leh is a hill resort with several attractions. It lies in the eastern part of the northern Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. It has been the center of Tibeto-Buddhist Culture since long time. Its colorful gompas attract the devout Buddhists from far and away. The Buddhist capital of North India also is a favorite hiking locale that is thronged by adventure seekers.

Leh is a fascinating destination. It is surrounded with the Passes and the Roof of the World awaits you. The land of incomparable landscapes and the majestic mountains of Leh attract adventurers. The best time to visit Leh is in the summer i.e. between the months of June and August. In winters the temperature at Leh goes below zero degrees often.

Your visit is not complete if you haven’t seen one of the major landmarks of Leh, the Leh Palace. The Leh Palace which is a miniature version of the Potala in Lhasa. You may climb up the Shanti Stupa to get a better view of the neighboring exotic locales. The quieter ones amongst you must try out meditation at the Mahabodhi Meditation center.

Then there are gompas like the Namgyal Tsemo Gomapa, Soma gompa and the Sankar gompa. The major attractions in the Gompa are the three-story high Buddha image and ancient manuscripts and frescoes. You may catch some breathtakingly beautiful vistas of Leh from here.

You may pick up souvenirs of the local handicrafts and traditional clothes from the Ladakh festival or from the bustling bazaar. Leh is also famous for its beautiful handicrafts & clothes. The attractive long lasting woolen carpets of hand work that will add a value to your places and gives a grace to that.

See towering mountains reach up to a clear blue sky. Hear the rhythmic chant of Buddhist monks in an ancient monastery where time stands still. See the rushing waters of an icy river surge down from a glacial height. For the adventure seekers Leh is a superlative option to visit. Leh has many adventures sports in its list like mountain biking, hiking, trekking, river rafting (at the Zanskar river), polo and archery etc

Let us get moving to the lovely Leh and be in the lap of the Himalayas and experience the journey through this haven of India.

People and Lifestyle in Leh
Leh is not only beautiful because of its breathtaking natural beauty but also the warmth and love of the people in Leh makes it beautiful. People, culture and lifestyle in Leh are quite diverse and has a rich variety which allures the tourists. Globalization has changed the lifestyle of all the cities and Leh is no different but still it has retained its unique charm and flavor. The people of Leh are hardy and tough akin to the rugged mountains which surround their dwellings yet very soft and plane at heart .With round faces, short noses, and chinki eyes they resemble more to the people of Tibet and central Asia than of India.

The original population is believed to have been that of Dards, an Indo-Aryan race from down the Indus. But over years, a huge influx from Tibet overwhelmed the culture of the "Dards" and obliterated their racial characteristics. Uniqueness in people, culture and lifestyle in Leh is visible in every sphere.

Religion and Culture
Leh is filled with colourful through its different culture. It has been the center of Tibeto-Buddhist Culture since long time. Its colorful gompas attract the devout Buddhists from far and away. Due to the majority of Buddhism Leh is also known as the Buddhist capital of North India. Buddhism reached Tibet from India via Leh, and there are ancient Buddhist frock engravings all over the region, even in areas like Drass and the lower Suru valley which today are inhabited by an exclusively Muslim population. The approach to a Buddhist Village is invariably marked by 'Mani' walls, which are ling chest-high structures faced with engraved stones bearing the Mantra "Om Mane Padme Hum" and by 'Chorten', commemorative cairns, like stone pepper-posts.
