Leh Jeep Safari
The most popular destination for jeep safari is the leh region as it provide a rugged terrain along with the temples and monasteries which is a rejuvenating experience of its own. The 472 km overland journey is open for around three months in a year, from June to end of September. This trip can be extended to Nubra valley across Khardongla pass, the highest motorable road in the world or to Srinagar after crossing Zojila Pass. Another option is to drive to Leh via Tsokar and Tsomoriri Lake but will have to arrange your tour through tour operator from Leh, who can send you a permit to enter Tsomoriri Lake with a local taxi.
Rohtang Pass (3980 m). The landscape surprisingly changes into the rugged brown of the rain shadow area of Lahaul. The landscape changes into naked desert after crossing a few villages of Lahul with prayer flags on their roofs. You will start ascending Baralacha Pass and you can see surprisingly sprawling plain areas of Serhcu where you will spend a night. Further, there many small passes before you cross Taklang La pass Taglangla at 5330m to reach Rumtse and Gya village. An hour drive from Runtse takes you to Upshi where you corss indus river enter Indus valley with dotted villages on it's bank and beautiful monasteries bulit on hill side. You journey to Leh making it a drive of lifetime's experience.
There are some other ways to travel through jeep safari i.e.
Leh – Khalsar(110km) cross Khardong-la (5540 M) through the highest road in the world. Arrive at Khalsar over the pass for overnight stay in camp. Khalsar – Panamik(75 km)
After visiting Gompa Monastery at Khalsar, drive to Panamik a very large settlement at the bank of Nubra river.At Panamik,Visit Hot water sulphur spring, have a bath (ideal for physical ailments and visit to the 250-year-old Samoor Gompa.At Leisure,Visit Nubra river, local people, Bazar and pick some of local Handicrafts. Panamik – Tirit,Tirit village - a centre of Handicrafts, Wool and Jewellery.Tirit – Leh,Drive back to Leh after crossing Khardong-la, reaching Leh.
Leh – Durbuk(110 km),Visit enroute Chemra and Taktak Gompas. Durbuk – Lukung(100km),Bypass village Tangtse, drive upto Lukung. Lukung - Pangong Lake (60km),Drive via Spangmik village at the bank of Pangong lake. This lake is the highest in Ladakh and is famous for colourful stones and wild flowers (in summer months).At Pangong Lake,Explore the area, drive and trek along the lake. It is a once-in-a-life time experience.Pangong Lake - Tangtse (90km),Drive back upto Tangtse by crossing over a pass. There are beautiful sites for photography. Tangtse – Changla,Enroute visit Durbuk Gompa. Changla - Hemis – Leh,Visit Hemis Gompa. It is the richest gompa of this region.
