Magnetic Hill
Can anyone ever imagine the movement of a vehicle up a steep mountain, with its ignition off? Beyond anyone’s imagination!! Well, this magnet magic can be experienced while you are travelling to Leh-Ladakh. And we can say, amid all the Himalayan and colonial wonders, there’s one more wonder coming your way – the Magnetic Hill.

Magnetic Hill is a gravity hill is located on the Leh-Kargil-Batalik national highway about 30 kms form Leh, and is bordered by the Sindhu river. The hill is alleged to have magnetic properties strong enough to pull cars uphill and force passing aircraft to increase their altitude in order to escape magnetic interference; in reality, the effect is an optical illusion created by the gravity hill.Although there are hundreds of known magnetic hill locations in the world, this is one of them.

Some people believes the magnetic force of the mountain draws all kinds of vehicles against gravity. Many others believe that this a mere optical illusion and has nothing to do with magnetic fields, electricity or unknown forces. The truth however, is that it is a type of optical illusion created by rising and descending terrain. It is a place where the layout of the surrounding land produces the optical illusion of making a slight downhill slope appear to be an uphill slope.

Not only vehicle, even helicopters and aircrafts feel the same magnetic impact. Locals and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) personnel claim that the helicopters and aircrafts that pass through the area have to fly at a greater speed to avoid the magnetic impact of the hill. And if the aircraft comes within the radius of Magnetic Hill, it starts to jerk.

While you are in this Himalayan region, you will also like seeing the hills and mountains. Here, the hills bear different colours. Some are white and snow-laden. Some are black or gray in colours while there are some that are green, red or orange in colour. Magnetic hill is one of the shining star among them. To experience this natural magic do visit this beautiful gift of your country.

Sindhu Darshan
The Sindhu Darshan Festival is organized annually at Leh and as the name suggests, is a celebration of River Sindhu, also known as the Indus. The Festival aims at projecting the Sindhu River as a symbol of multi-dimensional cultural identity, communal harmony and peaceful co-existence in India. This is organized with in the presence of a wide variety of cultural troupes from various corners of India. Troupes from States where the mighty Rivers of India run, brought with them water from those rivers in earthen pots and pour it in the river. People travel all over the world for a Darshan and Puja of the River Sindhu (Indus)
.
This festival begins usually on the full moon day in July, which is also termed "Guru Purnima". On the first day, the participants of this festival are welcomed and there is a reception on the banks of Sindhu at Shey, about14 km from Leh on Leh-Hemis Gompa Road. Being a truly National Integration Programme, the reception is jointly conducted by the Ladakh Buddhist Association, Shia majlis, Sunni Anjuman, Christian Moravian Church, Hindu Trust and Sikh Gurudwara Prabhandak Committee.

A ritual prayer is performed by 50 senior Lamas on the banks of the Sindhu. A host of cultural programmes are performed by the representatives of various states. The celebrations on the banks end with lunch for all the participants. Later, the participants are taken around for a sight-seeing trip. The day concludes with a campfire and get-together at night. On the third Day Sindhu Pujan takes place followed by cultural programmers and sightseeing. Then on the fourth day, the participants get ready for departure.

The River Indus signifies power, strength and permanence of the Indian civilization. This festival is celebrated with the aim of promoting cultural and communal harmony in India.

A large number of participants from different parts of the country participate in Sindhu Darshan Festival. They bring water from the river of their own state in earthen pots and immerse these pots in the Sindhu River. This symbolizes the togetherness of different people, different cultures and oneness even with segregation.

Passes in Ladakh

Ladakh is an exotic destination where a high plateau, steep mountains and valleys abound. The route to Ladakh by road is through several scenic passes. There are many passes which serve as the natural gate passes to this land of jagged peaks. 'La' in the local Ladakhi language means Mountain Pass and 'Ladakh' therefore also known with the name of 'Land of Passes.' You can find some of the highest motorable roads in the world in Ladakh, which traverse these high passes and take you to exotic hidden locations high in the Himalayas. Some of the famous and exotic mountain passes associated with this beautiful land are:- Zoji La, Rohtang Pass, Baralacha-La, Khardung La, Namika La, Fotu La, Lachulung La, Taglang La.

Valley of Ladakh
The highlands of Ladakh is one of the most sparsely populated ones in the whole world with just two people per sq km. We have caught just a glimpse of these wonderlands below:-

Drass Valley:- A charming valley buzzing with human life centered on the Drass River, Dras Valley has a short summer season. The valley of Drass is inhabited by Brokpas who probably migrated to this tract from Gilgit several centuries ago.

Nubra Valley:- During early summer, Nubra is clad in endless bushes of yellow and pink wild roses, and once the valley is through with the season of roses around August, a carpet of wild lavender lies gently on it.

Suru Valley:- Suru valley has very harsh winters with frequent and heavy snowfalls ranging from mid-November to May, enwrapping it in thick layers of snow. Agriculture is the main source of livelihood for the people of this valley

Rangdum Valley:- At one of its sides are the colorful hills while on the other side are rocky mountains and glaciers. Midway between Kargil and Padum (Zanskar), it is a popular night stay for the trekkers to Padum.

Lakes of ladakh
Ladakh is home to some very beautiful lakes. As peak winter temperatures hover near -- 50 degrees for days at a time, everything in Ladakh freezes -- the Indus and Zanskar become broad highways of ice, and the great lakes, Pangong and Tso Morari, freeze to a depth of several meters.

Pangong Lake:- And there’s the ‘tireless traveler’ - the learning by living person who opts for a destination in order to explore and experience the unknown.Beyond this remote village there is nothing but the extreme mountain ridge.

Tsomoriri Lake:- Tsomoriri is like no man's land - no food, no cold drinks and definitely no petrol. So you have to make your own arrangements from Leh. Tsomoriri Lake lies close to the Indo-China border and is not accessible without a special permit.
