Located high in the ranges of the Western Ghats, the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the most famous sanctuaries of South India and attracts loads of tourists every year. The place has a scenic lake formed by the Mullaperiyar Dam across the Periyar River right in the middle of the Sanctuary, where animals come in everyday to either drink water or to take a dip. From elephants to tigers, all can be spotted here.

The major attraction of the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is the herd of wild elephants that can be seen moving about in their natural habitat. Apart from elephants, other attractions include tigers, Gaur, Wild Pigs, Sambar, Barking Deer, Mouse Deer and Dole or Indian Wild Dog. At present, there are about 40 tigers in the place.

The bird population at the Sanctuary comprises of Darters, Cormorants, Kingfishers, and the great Malabar Hornbill and racket-tailed Drongoes. The reptilian inhabitants boast of Monitor Lizards that can be spotted lazing in the sun, on the rocks along the lakeshore.Visitors who trek into the Periyar national park often see a Python and sometimes even a King Cobra.

Sprawled over an area of 777 sq kms, the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary offers a golden opportunity to those visiting it, to observe the animals in their natural habitat. This is the closest man can come to the wild side of the nature.
