It’s situated along the rain-shadow area of the Western Ghats. The sanctuary is located on the other part of the stretch of Marayoor and Udumalped road. Tricky thorny Scrub Forest with Xerophytic varieties, Wetlands, Dry Deciduous Forest stretches, High Sholas mark this area. Animals like The Giant Grizzled Squirrel which has been specially protected by the authorities of this sanctuary in Kerala, Elephant, Spotted Deer, Rabbit, Gaur, Hanuman Langur, Panther, Sambar, are the main attractions to visit this sanctuary. The famous and beautiful Marayoor sandal forest and the attractive Thoovanam cascading waterfalls are also present here, adding more reasons to visit this sanctuary.

The Uullaperiyar River harbors an exclusive marine ecosystem. The islets and water systems shelter and witness some interesting complex innate interrelationships between the terrestrial aquatic and subterranean living forms. The park owes its beautiful greenery to over 1800 blossoming plants which include 171 grass types and 143 orchid varieties. 35 Species of animals found here include The Wild Elephant, Malabar Giant Squirrel,The Barking Deer, Tiger, Wild Dog, Panther, Gaur, Wild Boar, Sambar, Sloth Bear, Leopard, Lion-Tailed Macaque, Nilgiri Langur, Civet, Nilgiri Tahr, Etc. The forest has undersized evergreen plantation at an elevation of 1000m at the southern summit of the hills, while on top of the western coast, we get to see the mountainous gradient with semi-evergreen forests and lower slopes assorted deciduous forests. While trekking in the course of the harmless forests one can come across elephant, barking deer, gaurs, mouse deer, sambar, wild dogs, wild boars, tiger, lion tailed macaques, Malabar squirrels, panthers and Nilgiri langurs. Aquatic birds like little cormorant, egrets, darter and pied king fisher can be observed flying around. Snakes like the python and King cobra are spottedhere. Beautiful moth and butterflies are also present here.

Its features consist of Tropical Dense Evergreen Forest, Kuntherekka Pine, Punnappa, White Pine, Maravuri, Bhadraksham, Palai etc. It has the most extensive and richest forest belt to note.
Elephant, Wild Pig , Deer , Leopard Tiger, Bear, etc., mammals including Python ,Viper, Rat Snake, Cobra, Etc., Hornbill, Woodpecker, Kingfisher among the birds are mainly found in this belt.
