Usually, houseboats in Kerala are known as Kettuvallam which means "package" or "bundle" boat. Literally kettu means “tied with ropes” and vallam means “boat”. The length of these houseboats is 60 to 80 ft and width is 15 ft. these boats are made up of wooden planks which are joined and stitched together by means of coconut fiber ropes. The roof of these boats is of palm leaves and bamboo poles. The exterior of the houseboat is painted with cashew nut oil which acts as a shielded coating. Long ago when there was no rail and road transportation available, traders’ use these boats as a main form of transportation in the domestic waterways. These boats have sufficient facilities for sleeping and cooking for the boatman or of their families. These boatmen are famous because of their folk songs while rowing the houseboat and also for their way of cooking.

Today the new generation houseboats are used which are the modernize form of original Kettuvallam. Today the houseboats which are used have all the innovative comforts like a hotel. They consist of well-furnished bedrooms, cosy living rooms, modern hygienic toilets, beautiful kitchen and also a balcony for angling. Many house boats get power from inboard diesel engines and also through solar energy.
