About khajuraho
khajuraho, situated in the heart of Central India state of Madhya Pradesh, is known all over the world for its beautiful temples and erotic sculpture. It is also one of the most popular tourist destinations in India. khajuraho has the largest group of medieval Hindu temples, famous for their sculpture. According to the different versions of the origin of the city, the creators of khajuraho claimed descent from the moon. The legend that describes the origin of this great dynasty is a fascinating one: Hemavati was a beautiful young daughter of a Brahmin priest and was a child widow. One summer night, while she was bathing in a lotus-filled pond, the Moon God was so dazed by her beauty that he descended to earth in human form full of lust and passion and ravished her. A son was born of this union between a human and a god. His mother named him Chandravarman. As she was a widow who had given birth to a child she feared being harassed by society. To save herself and her child she took refuge in the dense forest of Central India. Here she trained her son both as a mother and a mentor or guru. The boy grew up to become a brave king who went on to establish the great Candela dynasty. When he was established as a ruler, he had a dream-where his mother implored him to build temples that would reveal human passions. Chandravarman began the construction of the first of the temples and successive rulers. Thus he brought an artistic revolution by building the famous khajuraho temples, in the town, which was his capital. Some people also believe these erotic art forms to be the visual depiction of Kamasutra, art of sex or the relations between Shiva and Parvati, the divine couple. khajuraho temples got lost into obscurity and were only discovered by chance but they quickly became India's second most favored tourist destination after Taj Mahal. This temple complex is perhaps the largest group of medieval temples. Other than eroticism, these sculptures also depict other refined courtly accomplishments such as music and dance. And then off course the sound and light show will enchant your evenings. The temples of khajuraho can be divided into three geographical groups - western, eastern and southern. Some of the finest temples of khajuraho are Kandariya Mahadeo Temple, Chaunsat Yogini Temple, Vishwanath Temple, Lakshamana Temple, Parsvanath Temple, Ghantai Temple, Adinatha Temple, Duladeo Temple and Chaturbhuj Temple.
